The person in the other chair.
I’m Hazel Calloway, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Richmond, Virginia. I’ve worked with adults for eleven years, first in community mental health, and in private practice since 2019.

Why I do this work

Most days end with a cup of tea and the lamp on.
Before I became a counselor, I was a hospice volunteer. I learned there that most people don’t need advice. They need someone who stays in the room while things are hard, and who helps them find their own footing again.
Today most of the people I see are the steady ones: the nurse who holds everyone’s worry, the teacher with nothing left by Friday, the parent who looks fine at school pickup. Therapy is often the first hour of the week that belongs only to them.
I work with adults only, in my office on Grove Avenue and online anywhere in Virginia. I keep my caseload small on purpose, so I can remember what you told me last week and think about it between sessions.
Outside the office I walk the Fan most mornings, I’m slowly learning the cello, and I make a very average sourdough.
Calm, practical and paced by you. Here is what you can expect from the first session on.
Calm and practical
We talk, and we also try things. Most sessions end with one small idea you can carry into your week.
Grounded in evidence
I draw on CBT, ACT and EMDR, chosen for what you’re facing and explained in plain words.
At your pace
You decide what we talk about and how fast. Nothing is forced, and “not today” is always a fine answer.
Training and license
Virginia requires counselors to hold a state license. You can look mine up on the Department of Health Professions website at any time.
